Turning ESG reporting into a strategic asset – 6 Min. to Understand – Pierre Léonard

Turning ESG reporting into a strategic asset – “6 Min. to Understand” with Pierre Léonard. Midoricast: Podcast #241

Six minutes to understand how to turn ESG reporting into a strategic asset!

ESG reporting is often experienced as a heavy, time-consuming and sometimes discouraging obligation. In this episode of the “6 Min. to Understand” series, Pierre Léonard offers a clear and pragmatic shift in perspective: what if ESG reporting became a genuine strategic lever, rather than an administrative burden?

In six minutes, Pierre identifies several very concrete pitfalls that many organisations face today. Each time, he shares practical, operational approaches that can be applied immediately, illustrated with real-world situations from the field.

The discussion also broadens to more systemic issues, notably technological dependency and the growing interest in European solutions, within a geopolitically unstable context where certain dependencies can become critical.

In conclusion, Pierre shares three simple tips to move into action and reiterates a strong message: less pain, more value. ESG reporting can become a strategic asset, provided it is approached as such.

A short, dense episode, directly useful for decision-makers facing real-world constraints.

Why this series?

We support companies that implement real and measurable ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) approaches. Pierre, for his part, trains and supports organisations throughout this transition. Our approaches differ, but they are complementary: we encourage, he supports.

This choice also raises a real question: where should the line be drawn?

Some companies mentioned in this series are not aligned with our current criteria, and we would refuse any collaboration with them as long as no concrete change is underway. But this is precisely where Pierre steps in: his role is to initiate that transformation.

This podcast does not seek to judge, but to inspire. The goal? Encourage rather than discourage, support rather than exclude.

Let’s commit together to a circular, sustainable and inclusive economy. Listening, reflection, action… in 6 minutes.

[00:00:00] Jingle Intro: You are listening to “The Podcast Factory Org”.

[00:00:02] Michel: Welcome to a new episode of your podcast “Midoricast”, dedicated to positive initiatives for the environment and the transition. And since we’re talking about transition, today I’m joined by my friend Pierre Léonard in the “6 minutes to understand” series.

ESG reporting: a constraint?

[00:00:14] Pierre Léonard: Hello Michel, hello everyone! Welcome to this new episode of “6 minutes to understand”, the podcast that answers all decision-makers’ questions about sustainable development. Today, we’re going to look at how to turn your ESG reporting not into an administrative burden, but into a genuine strategic asset. Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by ESG reporting requirements? You’re not alone. Many executives find themselves facing stacks of reports that seem endless. But I have some good news: there are concrete ways to simplify the process and make it truly useful for your organisation.

Inaccurate ESG data & consequences

[00:00:55] Pierre Léonard: Let’s start with the first issue: inaccurate data. As the saying goes, “garbage in, garbage out” — flawed data leads to poor decisions. Did you know that 77% of investors consider the reliability of ESG data to be crucial when guiding their investment choices? As a business leader, you need to ensure your data is accurate even before considering publishing it. The solution: centralise and systematically verify your data. Create a single source of truth where all data is gathered, validated and made accessible to the relevant teams.

Process complexity

[00:01:34] Pierre Léonard: The second obstacle is process complexity. How often have you heard your teams complain about the time spent manually collecting data or reconciling information from different sources? Automation is your ally. Invest in tools that automate data collection and standardisation. Not only will you save valuable time, but you’ll also reduce the risk of errors. I recently worked with an SME in the textile sector that reduced the time spent on ESG reporting by 60% thanks to automating certain data collection processes.

Inappropriate tool choices

[00:02:13] Pierre Léonard: The third issue is choosing the wrong tools. Many companies believe that purchasing an expensive piece of software will solve all their ESG reporting problems, but that’s rarely the case. Prioritise dedicated solutions that are suited to your real needs and the size of your organisation. Today, there are excellent specialised platforms that strike a good balance between functionality and ease of use. What matters is not having the most sophisticated tool, but the one that best meets your specific needs.

[00:02:47] Michel: Pierre, I’d like to make a comment here. Why not take the time to look specifically for “Made in Europe” tools? That would already be a responsible step.

[00:02:56] Pierre Léonard: Given the times we’re living in, that’s true — it can be an interesting approach. As Jean-Marc Jancovici, a great fan of understatement, might say: an approach that would not be entirely without interest.

ESG strategy & business strategy

[00:03:06] Pierre Léonard: The fourth pitfall is the lack of integration between your ESG strategy and your business strategy. Too often, ESG is treated as a separate project, disconnected from commercial and operational objectives. For ESG reporting to truly create value, it must be aligned with your overall strategy. Involve senior management in defining indicators and establish clear links between those indicators and your business objectives. For example, a logistics company recently integrated its CO₂ emission reduction targets into its cost optimisation strategy, turning an environmental constraint — once again — into a competitive advantage.

Rapid regulatory change

[00:03:52] Pierre Léonard: Finally, the fifth challenge lies in underestimating the rapid evolution of regulation. The regulatory framework — ESG regulation in particular — is evolving at an impressive pace, as we’ve already seen in our main episodes on the CSRD and the VSME. To avoid unpleasant surprises, regularly audit your reporting practices and stay informed about regulatory developments. Better still, anticipate them. Companies that prepare in advance for new requirements turn this constraint into an opportunity to stand out.

Conclusion

[00:04:24] Pierre Léonard: In conclusion, ESG reporting should not be seen as an administrative burden, but rather as a strategic tool. By addressing these five common issues, you can transform your approach to ESG reporting into a genuine performance lever.

Three concrete tips

[00:04:40] Pierre Léonard: Before we wrap up, here are three concrete tips to help you move into action. First, start by assessing your current ESG reporting processes and identifying weak points. Next, clearly define the links between your objectives and your business strategy. Finally, invest in training your teams so they understand the importance and value of high-quality ESG reporting. Remember: less pain, more value — and you’ll turn ESG reporting into a strategic asset.

Next episode announcement

[00:05:12] Pierre Léonard: Thank you for being with me for these “6 minutes to understand” how to simplify your ESG reporting. In the next episode, we’ll tackle a current topic: sustainable development, in light of the geostrategic and geopolitical developments at the beginning of 2026.

[00:05:30] Michel: Thank you all, see you soon. As you might expect, I’m always fooling around with Pierre — you can’t see it, but sometimes there’s a little laugh in his voice, which helps you understand better. Before we completely wrap up, Pierre, I’d really like to insist on one point: with everything that’s been happening geopolitically, it’s high time we realise that supply lines can be cut very quickly — with a mouse click, with a single button. It’s time for everyone in Europe to start thinking, “Not only can I use European tools,” but also for developers listening to us to say, “There’s a business opportunity here — we can change the game.” Thank you all, see you very soon, and don’t forget the voicemail.

[00:05:59] Pierre Léonard: And that’s exactly what we’ll be talking about in the next episode.
