LCA, a compass for sustainable businesses! – “6 Min. to Understand” with Pierre Léonard. Midoricast: Podcast #210

In this episode of the “6 Minutes to Understand” series, Pierre Léonard, a facilitator in sustainable development, explains LCA — Life Cycle Assessment. This powerful tool makes it possible to evaluate the environmental impact of a product or service throughout its entire lifecycle, from raw material extraction to end-of-life waste.

Why is this essential for businesses, large or small?

Because it’s not enough to claim to be “eco-responsible“, you need to prove it with concrete data. Thanks to LCA, you can identify the real “hotspots” in your activity and take action where it really matters.

With examples (such as the company Interface or a craft chocolatier), practical advice and accessible tools like Totem, Pierre guides you towards a more clear-sighted, collaborative, and above all more effective environmental strategy. A truly insightful episode, ideal for any Green Team, leader or organisation wishing to align ecology with strategy.

Why this section?

We support companies that apply real and measurable ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) approaches. Pierre, on the other hand, trains and supports them through this transition. Our approaches are different, but complementary: we encourage, he guides.

This choice also presents a real challenge: where do we draw the line?

Some companies mentioned in this section do not align with our current criteria, and we would refuse any collaboration with them unless they initiate a concrete change. But this is exactly where Pierre comes in: his role is to initiate this transformation.

This podcast does not aim to judge, but to inspire. The goal? To encourage rather than discourage, to guide rather than exclude.

Let’s commit together to a circular, sustainable, and inclusive economy. Listen, reflect, act… in 6 minutes.

Michel: [00:00:18] Welcome to another episode of “Midoricast”, your podcast about positive environmental initiatives. “Midori” means green, “cast” is for Broadcast and we’re in the “Six minutes pour comprendre” section with our friend Pierre Léonard, who has the floor!

Pierre Léonard: [00:00:31] Well, hello, thank you Michel and welcome to another episode of “Six minutes pour comprendre”, the column that explains everything about sustainable development to corporate decision-makers. I’m a sustainable development facilitator, and today we’re going to tackle an abbreviation that’s a bit barbaric and perhaps a bit frightening, but which covers a concept that is essential for all companies that care about their environmental impact: LCA. What does it mean? C. A. C. So again, what does it mean? Well, imagine you’re the CEO of a furniture company, you think your products are environmentally friendly because you use labelled wood, but do you really know the overall impact of your production, of your furniture, on the environment? Well, that’s where life cycle analysis comes in. And what is it, in fact? It’s a powerful method for assessing the environmental impact of any product or service throughout its life, from the moment we extract the raw materials to the point we end up with the final waste – the waste we can’t do anything with. This analysis will enable us to understand the impact of each stage in the life of our product.

Pierre Léonard: [00:01:55] So how does it work in practice? Well, there are four key stages in a life cycle analysis. First, we define the objectives and scope of the study. What exactly do you want to analyse? If we take the example of our furniture manufacturer, will it be just one chair, or will it be a whole range of furniture?

Pierre Léonard: [00:02:12] Next, we’re going to do a life cycle inventory, which means that we’re going to quantify all the energy flows and all the material flows that come in and out, so it goes both ways, at each stage of the product’s life cycle. We will also quantify the emissions and waste that each of these stages generates.

Pierre Léonard: [00:02:33] Then, once we’ve identified these impacts and quantified them, we’ll assess them using environmental indicators such as climate change, resource depletion or eutrophication, a term we’ll come back to later, to measure the real impact.

Pierre Léonard: [00:02:48] And finally, the fourth step is to interpret the results so that we can draw conclusions and identify areas for improvement. So life cycle analysis is a rather complex multi-criteria approach.

Michel: [00:02:59] So that the listeners are sure we understand each other: if we take the example of the electric car, studies have been done and they have first been compared. The first question is whether there has been any comparison with others. And the second part of the question is that I’ve rarely seen a study of electric cars that talks about the cost of extracting oil and transporting it by sea, and about shipping accidents. Do we set the cursor at a precise point to remain objective and coherent right to the end?

Pierre Léonard: [00:03:20] Yes, life cycle analysis is really designed to have objective results. The example you gave of the sinking of the oil tanker may not be taken directly into a LCA, or it may be taken at the margin… I admit that I’m not expert enough in LCA to be able to give you an answer on that one, but the idea is really to have criteria that are quantifiable, that are objective, so that we can say “There, my product has such and such an impact on the environment”.

Pierre Léonard: [00:03:43] So life cycle analysis is not just about CO2 emissions, it also takes into account a whole range of environmental impacts throughout the product’s life cycle, before use, during use and after use. That’s what makes it such a powerful and comprehensive tool.

Pierre Léonard: [00:04:01] And don’t think that life cycle analysis is just for big groups or corporations. There are examples of a carpet manufacturer, a company called Interface, which identified that their raw materials were responsible for the majority of their environmental impact, and decided to change their approach by manufacturing tiles, for example, from recycled fishing nets, which reduced their carbon footprint by 35%. And so a chocolate maker, for example, will be able to use a basic life cycle analysis to identify mitigation strategies. How can he reduce his impact on the environment while making his business more resilient against environmental risk, like the recent surge of cocoa prices, for example!

Pierre Léonard: [00:04:45] The question I have for you is this: as a manager or member of a Green Team in an organisation, how can you integrate life cycle analysis into your strategy? We’re going to give three concrete tips.

Pierre Léonard: [00:04:55] Start small so you don’t lose heart, choose an object or a service or a product on which you’re going to apply this life cycle analysis, it will give you an initial idea of the hot spots of the environmental aspects of your activity. And the good news is that there are actually free online tools like the Totem platform, which is a Belgian tool for the construction industry that you can use. I’ve mentioned Totem, but there are others.

Pierre Léonard: [00:05:19] Train yourself! Life cycle assessment is a standardised method that complies with ISO standards 14040 and 14044, so there you have it. Invest in training your team to master this tool – or you can also turn to external consultancies.

Pierre Léonard: [00:05:32] And then collaborate because life cycle analysis is not something you do on your own. You do it with your suppliers, you do it with your customers. You need input from your entire value chain. So involve them in the process to achieve more accurate and complete results.

Michel: [00:05:46] And why not with the competitors?

Pierre Léonard: [00:05:47] Well, if competitors are willing, why not? It can actually lead to the creation of good practices that will ultimately benefit the whole industry. It’s still a bit complicated to get across, but it’s a very worthwhile approach. In fact, we’ll be talking about it again in an episode!

Pierre Léonard: [00:06:03] To sum t up, life cycle analysis is much more than a simple environmental assessment tool. It’s a real lever for transforming your company, and the icing on the cake is that you can even turn it into a commercial asset by publishing the results on your website. In today’s world, environmental performance is no longer just an option, it’s a necessity. And LCA is a bit like your compass for navigating towards a more sustainable future. Thank you for joining me for these “Six minutes to understand” life cycle analysis. In a future episode, we’ll look at how to involve your various stakeholders in your ESG approach.

Michel: [00:06:36] And don’t forget that “Six minutes pour comprendre” doesn’t stop at six minutes, because in the text of the podcast you have a link to an answering machine, there’s a possible interaction, and you can contact Pierre Léonard and visit his blog “Six minutes pour comprendre”.
