Beatsteaks | Secret rituals and Pukkelpop

Celebrating their 20th anniversary, Beatsteaks talks about secret rituals and their upcoming performance at Pukkelpop.

Do you still remember the very first record (vinyl, cassette, cd, …) you ever bought?

I think the first Vinyl Record I ever bought was AC-DC “Highway To Hell”. Also because it was one of the few available ones in the GDR at the time.

Has it always been your dream to step up in the music business?

Not at all. It all happened more or less by accident.

What’s your ambition, your ultimate dream?

Many of my dreams have already been fulfilled by now so there is not much left to be desired I guess. My ambition is to write good music in the practice room with my band mates as long as we can and play concerts that make people happy.

What would you like people to remember you by, after a performance?

I would like it when they can forget their problems for a while and loose themselves in the music and the atmosphere at a concert. I hope they say they just witnessed one of the best live concerts ever and that they can’t wait to come again!

Do you have a secret ritual before every performance?

Yes, but as you said, it’s secret.

What’s the craziest thing a fan ever did?

It’s hard to pick the “craziest” thing to be honest. I guess coming more than ones to a show is pretty crazy in my opinion.

If you could be any cartoon character, who would it be ?

The pink panther.

Tell us about the Live Magnet EP. What’s the inspiration, how long did it take to record?

We wanted to contribute something to the “record store day” and we had been recording lots of concerts from our “Creep Magnet Tour 2014”. It was pretty time consuming to pick the best version of each song but we had a lot of fun mixing them, putting them in order and we are very happy with the outcome.

Turn ons, turn offs?

Turn ons: Old guitars and amps and so on… Turn offs: racism, nationalism and other brainless activities

Name something you love to do, but just suck at?

Playing the drums.

Do you remember the very first concert you did?

Yes, it was in a school nearby at a student party. We were very nervous and hopelessly over ambitioned I guess. But it was a lot of fun though.

If you could bring back any person (or artist) to live, who would it be?

There are so many that it is hard to pick just one. Joe Strummer -would be nice to have him back again.

Your favorite swear word.

Scheisse.

Are you looking forward to your performance on Pukkelpop here in Belgium? What do you expect from it?

I am definitely looking forward to it, because we always had a great time in Belgium and the people there seemed to like us and made the concerts very special for us.

What else can we expect in 2015?

We will play quite a few shows in 2015. From living room size to Rock am Ring madness and back. And because it is our 20th anniversary, we are determined to enjoy every single one of them! Don’t miss it!

What’s the top 3 of your bucket list (10 things to do before I die) ?

-Finish this interview

-Take a shower

-Kiss my son good night
